
Financial Expert for Money magazine NBC's Today
Jean Chatzky was named an editor-at-large of Money in February 1998. A celebrated journalist and author, she joined the nation's largest financial publication after a five-year run at its rival monthly SmartMoney, where she was a key member of its start-up staff. In addition to editing Money stories on various personal-finance topics, she writes Money Talk, a monthly column on consumer issues and financial planning.
Starting her career in 1986 at Working Woman, Chatzky soon rose to assistant editor before joining the New York-based start-up staff Business Traveler International. In 1989 she joined the equity research department of Dean Witter Reynolds, returning to journalism two years later as a reporter/researcher at Forbes. She moved to the Dow Jones/Hearst start-up SmartMoney in 1992, rising from staff writer to senior editor. In addition to her work at Money, she writes regular personal finance columns for Time magazine and USA Weekend.
Jean is the financial editor for NBC’s Today show and the host of a series of money minutes – Talking Money With Jean Chatzky – on CNBC. She has appeared on Oprah, Live With Regis, The View and numerous other programs. She is the author of three books on personal finance, including her latest, You Don’t Have To Be Rich: Comfort, Happiness and Financial Security on: Your Own Terms.
Born in Michigan and raised in Wisconsin, Indiana and West Virginia, Jean holds a BA in English from the University of Pennsylvania. She sits on the board of trustees of the March of Dimes and the board of directors of the Briarcliff Manor Education Foundation. She lives in Westchester County, New York with her husband Peter and their two children.
